The independent life of art

Duchamp: "We don't emphasize enough that the work of art is independent of the artist. The work of art lives by itself, and the artist who happened to make it is like an irresponsible medium. No artist can say at any time: 'I am a genius. I am going to paint a masterpiece.'"

Bateson: "Now, Mr. Duchamp, what you are saying is that the artist is the picture's way of getting itself painted. That is a very serious and reasonable thing to say, but it implies that, in some sense, the work of art exists before it is there on canvas."

Duchamp: "Yes, it has to be pulled out."
